Why Families Choose Ming Hwee

01

43 Years of Family-Run Expertise

Ming Hwee was founded in 1983 by Shirley, a working mother who experienced firsthand how the right helper transforms family life. Two generations later, we remain family-owned and operated. Our retention rates β€” families returning to hire their second and third helpers through us β€” reflect a track record that no marketing claim can replicate.

02

Every Helper Is Personally Interviewed

Every candidate is interviewed by our team before she appears on your shortlist. We assess not just skills and experience, but temperament, communication style, and caregiving instinct. We present people we'd trust in our own homes β€” typically 3–5 curated candidates per family, not a database of hundreds.

03

Full Support From Day One Through Contract End

Our work doesn't end when your helper arrives. We conduct structured check-ins at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months post-placement. For the full duration of the employment, our team handles renewals, transfers, disputes, home leave, and any issue that arises. One agency, end-to-end.

04

Three Nationalities, One Consistent Standard

Whether you hire from the Philippines, Indonesia, or Myanmar, our screening, training, and documentation process is identical. Different nationalities bring different strengths β€” language, cuisine, cultural fit β€” but the rigour of our placement process does not vary by origin country.

What Families and Helpers Say

Our commitment goes beyond placement. We build lasting relationships that ensure both families and helpers thrive together for years to come.

Ming Hwee Employment Agency is one of Singapore's longest-established domestic helper placement services, operating continuously since 1983. We are a MOM-licensed, family-run agency specialising in the recruitment and placement of Filipino, Indonesian, and Myanmar foreign domestic workers (FDWs) for Singapore households.

We operate our own office for direct candidate screening and remain, to this day, a family business where the founders' children work alongside the team that built the agency's reputation over four decades.

Why We Do What We Do

Finding the right domestic helper is an introduction between two families β€” yours, and hers. The helper leaving her home to care for yours has made one of the biggest decisions of her life. Our role is to ensure the match is right, the documentation is flawless, and the support continues for as long as the employment lasts.

The Shirley Legacy: Where It All Began

1982

Where It All Began

In 1982, Shirley was a young mother running her own business in Singapore. Like many working parents, she discovered firsthand how the right domestic helper could change everything β€” not just managing the household, but becoming a trusted presence for her children.

At a time when professional domestic helper recruitment barely existed in Singapore, Shirley saw the gap. Families were hiring through informal networks with no screening, no contracts, and no recourse. Helpers were arriving without preparation or support.

1983

Ming Hwee Agency Founded

Driven by this personal experience, she founded Ming Hwee Agency in 1983 to do it properly with a vision to connect families with domestic helpers who would be true household champions providing invaluable support.

Ming Hwee AEA Singapore Long Service Award for FDW
1991

Going the Extra Mile

In 1991, Shirley opened Ming Hwee's own office in the Philippines, personally interviewing every candidate. This wasn't standard practice then, and for most agencies, it still isn't. But Shirley believed that if she wouldn't place a helper in her own home, she wouldn't place her in yours.

Today

Continuing the Legacy

Today, Shirley's children lead the agency alongside a dedicated team that shares the values she built the business on. The industry has changed enormously since 1983 β€” new regulations, new technology, new expectations. What hasn't changed is the principle at the core: every match matters, every person matters, and doing it right takes time and care.

Indonesian Domestic Helper: A Natural Cultural Fit for Singapore Families

Indonesian domestic helpers are the most popular choice among Singapore families, and for good reason. Shared Southeast Asian heritage, familiar food cultures, and natural warmth create a household dynamic that feels right from the start. Ming Hwee has been placing Indonesian helpers with Singapore families since 1983, with a screening process that assesses cultural compatibility alongside skills and experience.

Indonesian and Singaporean Cultures Share Deep Southeast Asian Roots

Indonesia and Singapore share foundational cultural similarities β€” from food preferences and family values to the way elders are addressed and respected. For many families, this translates into faster settling-in, fewer misunderstandings, and longer employment stability. Indonesian helpers often adapt to household routines within the first 2–4 weeks.

Bahasa Indonesia and Malay Create an Immediate Language Bridge

Bahasa Indonesia and Malay share significant vocabulary and grammar, enabling basic communication from day one β€” even before English improves. For households with older family members who speak Malay, this linguistic connection is often the deciding factor in choosing an Indonesian helper.

Southeast Asian Cooking Skills That Match Local Palates

Indonesian helpers bring an intuitive understanding of Southeast Asian flavours: spice pastes, coconut-based curries, sambal, and rice-based dishes. With guidance on your family's specific preferences, most adapt quickly to your kitchen while occasionally introducing dishes that become new household favourites.

How Ming Hwee Places Indonesian Helpers

Every Indonesian candidate in our network has been screened for relevant experience, attitude, and communication ability. Before arrival, helpers complete English and caregiving training tailored to the needs of their future household. Typical placement timeline: 3–6 weeks from consultation to your helper's first day, depending on MOM processing.

Filipino Domestic Helper: English-Speaking, Professionally Trained

Filipino domestic helpers are sought after by Singapore families who value clear English communication, professional training, and a deep cultural orientation toward caregiving. Every Filipino helper working overseas completes a mandatory 216-hour TESDA certification β€” a government-mandated programme covering household management, childcare, eldercare, and professional work ethics.

Filipino Helpers Speak English Fluently From Day One

The Philippines' English-medium education system means your helper arrives able to follow detailed instructions, discuss your children's routines, communicate during medical emergencies, and engage with English-speaking household members naturally. There is no language ramp-up period β€” effective communication starts on her first day.

Filipino Helpers Arrive With Professional TESDA Certification

Every Filipino helper working in Singapore has completed a mandatory 216-hour Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) certification. This government-certified programme covers household management, specialised childcare and eldercare techniques, and professional work ethics. You are hiring someone who has been formally trained, not learning on the job.

Filipino Culture Places Family Caregiving at Its Centre

In Filipino culture, caring for family is central to identity. This translates directly into helpers who bring genuine warmth and attentiveness to childcare and eldercare β€” not just task completion, but real emotional engagement with the people they care for. Contract renewal rates for Filipino helpers are consistently strong, reflecting long-term satisfaction on both sides.

How Ming Hwee Places Filipino Helpers

Our own office interviews candidates directly, assessing communication style, temperament, and genuine suitability for your specific household. You receive a curated shortlist of 3–5 candidates β€” not a database. Typical placement timeline: 4–8 weeks from consultation to arrival for overseas hires; 2–3 weeks for transfer helpers already in Singapore.

Myanmar Domestic Helper: Dedicated, Respectful, Fastest Placement

Myanmar domestic helpers offer a combination of respectful temperament, strong work ethic, and the fastest placement timelines of any nationality we work with β€” as few as 2–3 weeks after MOM approval. For families who need reliable household support quickly and are willing to invest in a proper orientation period, Myanmar helpers are an excellent choice.

Myanmar Helpers Are Known for a Respectful, Gentle Approach

Rooted in Buddhist values of mindfulness and respect, Myanmar helpers are known for patience and conscientiousness that families describe as especially well-suited to caring for young children and elderly family members.

Some Myanmar Helpers Offer Basic Mandarin Communication

A number of Myanmar helpers have basic Mandarin skills β€” a meaningful advantage for Chinese-speaking families and elderly relatives more comfortable in Mandarin. Language ability varies by individual, so we always recommend assessing communication skills during interviews rather than assuming proficiency.

Myanmar Helpers Have the Fastest Placement Timeline

After MOM approval, Myanmar helper placements can be completed in 2–3 weeks β€” the fastest processing among the three nationalities we work with. For families with urgent household needs, this speed is a significant practical advantage.

What to Expect: An Honest Assessment

Myanmar helpers typically require a 2–4 month adjustment period to Singapore's lifestyle and household routines. English communication usually improves steadily over 3–6 months with daily practice and support. The families who invest time in clear, patient orientation during the first few months consistently report the strongest long-term outcomes.

A Myanmar Helper Is a Great Fit If You:

  • Value a respectful, patient helper willing to learn
  • Need faster placement timelines
  • Appreciate dedication and work ethic over immediate polish
  • Can provide clear orientation and language support in the early months

Consider an Alternative Nationality If You:

  • Need advanced English or Mandarin fluency from day one
  • Expect fully independent performance immediately upon arrival
  • Cannot invest time in initial training and cultural orientation

How Ming Hwee Places Myanmar Helpers

  1. Book a consultation with our team
  2. We match you with pre-screened candidates based on your family's needs
  3. Interview your shortlisted candidates
  4. Your helper arrives with ongoing orientation guidance and support

Direct Hire: When You Already Know Who You Want

Direct hire is a domestic helper placement service for Singapore families who have already identified a specific candidate β€” through personal referral, a returning helper, or their own network β€” and need professional support with work permit processing, MOM compliance, and documentation. Ming Hwee's direct hire service handles the entire administrative process while you focus on confirming your choice.

Direct Hire Means You Bring the Candidate, We Handle the Process

Work Permit Application & MOM Submission

We prepare and file everything through the official MOM e-Service portal, ensuring accuracy on the first submission. Errors in work permit applications can delay processing by 2–3 weeks β€” our team processes hundreds of applications annually and knows the system inside out.

Security Bond, Insurance & Medical

We arrange the mandatory $5,000 security bond (insured), set up medical insurance (minimum $15,000/year) and personal accident insurance (minimum $60,000/year) to MOM specifications, and coordinate the required medical examination.

SIP Registration & Logistics

We register your helper for the mandatory Settling-In Programme within the required 7-day window and coordinate transport to the training centre.

Contract Review

We ensure the employment contract covers all MOM-required terms β€” salary, rest days, duties, termination provisions β€” so both you and your helper start on solid footing.

Direct Hire Costs Less Because You've Already Found Your Candidate

Direct hire fees are lower than full recruitment because you've done the sourcing. You're paying for processing and compliance support, not candidate search and matching.

See Our Pricing for Current Direct Hire Rates β†’

Direct Hire Timeline: 2–3 Weeks for Transfers, 4–6 Weeks for Overseas

Transfer helpers already in Singapore: 2–3 weeks from submission to work permit issuance, depending on MOM processing. Overseas helpers: 4–6 weeks including embassy verification and travel. We don't promise faster than MOM allows. What we promise is that nothing on our end causes a delay.

Is Direct Hire Right for You?

This service is for families who have already identified a specific candidate. If you need help finding the right person, our full recruitment service includes sourcing, matching, and interviewing.

Work Permit Renewal: Keep Your Trusted Helper Without the Paperwork Stress

To renew your domestic helper's work permit in Singapore, you need an updated employment contract, current insurance coverage, a medical examination (6-monthly requirement), and a renewal application submitted through MOM's e-Service portal before the permit expires. Ming Hwee handles the entire process, ensuring timely completion and full MOM compliance.

Why Renewal Timing Matters More Than You Think

A renewal isn't just paperwork. It's the moment your helper decides whether she wants to stay with your family or explore other options. Delays, unclear terms, and last-minute scrambling send the wrong message. Families who plan renewals early and offer fair, clearly communicated terms retain their helpers at significantly higher rates.

What We Handle

  • Renewed employment contract with clearly stated terms
  • Updated medical and personal accident insurance coverage
  • Medical examination coordination (6-monthly MOM requirement)
  • MOM renewal application through official e-Service portal
  • Current salary and benefits benchmarking based on market data

When to Start Your Renewal

Begin 60 or more days before expiry for a relaxed timeline. If your helper's work permit expires in fewer than 30 days, contact us immediately β€” late renewals risk processing gaps that can create legal complications.

3-Step Renewal Process

  1. Book a consultation (5 minutes)
  2. We handle MOM paperwork while you review competitive terms with your helper
  3. Your helper signs, stays, and you avoid the cost and disruption of rehiring

Total time on your end: less than 1 hour over 4 weeks.

Helper Home Leave: Give Her the Break She's Earned

Home leave allows your domestic helper to return to her home country between contracts. Ming Hwee manages the full process: embassy endorsement applications (typically approved within 10 working days), flight coordination, automatic levy waiver processing, and deferred medical examinations.

What We Handle

  • Embassy endorsement applications and follow-ups
  • Automatic levy waiver processing for the home leave period
  • Deferred 6-monthly medical examination (if applicable)
  • Flight booking coordination and return travel arrangements
  • Real-time updates from submission through to her return

3-Step Process

  1. Click "Book My Home Leave" below
  2. Complete our short form with passport and contract details (2 minutes)
  3. Our team handles embassy submissions and travel coordination

Embassy slots fill quickly before peak travel periods. Starting early ensures your helper gets her leave when she needs it.

Helper Transfer Service: A Smooth Transition for Everyone

A helper transfer in Singapore occurs when an employer releases their domestic helper to work for a new employer, requiring MOM documentation, employer matching, and compliance processing. Ming Hwee's transfer service handles the full process β€” from finding suitable new employers through our network to completing all MOM submissions.

What's at Stake in a Transfer

For Your Helper

Every week without placement means lost income and growing risk that her work permit expires before a match is found, which can mean forced repatriation. Quality employers don't stay available indefinitely.

For You

Until a new work permit is issued, you remain legally responsible for your helper β€” levies, insurance, and accommodation costs continue. Improper documentation can result in MOM penalties.

What We Deliver

  • Active employer matching from our pre-screened family network
  • Professional MOM documentation and submission
  • Coordinated interviews arranged efficiently
  • Backup options to avoid repatriation
  • Complete legal compliance ensuring your liability ends properly

If your helper's work permit expires within 30 days, contact us immediately.

Temporary Accommodation: Safe, Professional Helper Lodging

MOM-approved temporary accommodation for your domestic helper while you travel, renovate, or manage a transfer. Ming Hwee's lodging facility provides 24/7 professional supervision, all-inclusive meals, Wi-Fi, laundry, and medical support access. You remain legally responsible for your helper's accommodation even when away β€” our facility ensures full compliance.

When You Need This

  • Holiday travel where bringing your helper isn't practical
  • Home renovations making your residence temporarily uninhabitable
  • Family emergencies requiring immediate travel
  • Transfer periods β€” safe accommodation while waiting for a new employer

What's Included

  • MOM-approved facility meeting all regulatory standards
  • 24/7 supervision by experienced resident caretakers
  • All-inclusive: meals, Wi-Fi, laundry, medical support access

Book early for peak periods: school holidays, Chinese New Year, and Hari Raya.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Hiring a Domestic Helper in Singapore

Everything you need to know about hiring and managing a domestic helper in Singapore.

Getting Started

Who can hire a domestic helper in Singapore?
+
Any Singapore citizen, PR, or valid work-pass holder aged 21 or above can hire a domestic helper, provided they are not an undischarged bankrupt, have the mental capacity to understand employer responsibilities, demonstrate genuine caregiving needs (young children, elderly family members, or household management), and have the financial ability to support a helper.
What are the eligibility requirements for helpers?
+
Helpers must be female, aged 23–50 (first-time foreign domestic workers), from MOM-approved countries (Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, and others), with at least 8 years of formal education. They must pass a medical examination and demonstrate basic English communication ability.
Do I need to complete any training before hiring a helper?
+
Yes. First-time employers must complete the Employer Orientation Programme (EOP), a 3-hour course covering legal responsibilities, employment regulations, and communication strategies. It is available online for $35 or in a classroom for $35–$60. You must complete EOP at least 2 working days before submitting a work permit application.

Mandatory Training

What is the Settling-In Programme (SIP)?
+
The SIP is a mandatory 1-day orientation programme for first-time helpers, required within 7 days of arrival (excluding Sundays and public holidays). It costs $76.40–$92.65 (employer pays) and covers cultural adaptation, high-rise safety, employment rights, and stress management. Helpers cannot start work until SIP is completed.
Can someone attend EOP on my behalf?
+
Yes, if you have a chronic medical condition, physical disability, are 60+ with physical discomfort, or are a new/expectant mother. Your representative must be over 21 with prior EOP attendance or domestic worker employment experience.

Costs & Financial Obligations

What are the mandatory costs of hiring a domestic helper in Singapore?
+
Monthly levy: $300 standard or $60 concessionary. Security bond: $5,000 (can be insured). Medical insurance: minimum $15,000/year. Personal accident insurance: minimum $60,000/year. Work permit fees: $35 application + $35 issuance. EOP and SIP fees as above. Helper salary is negotiated separately based on experience and job scope.

Process & Timeline

How long does it take to hire a domestic helper in Singapore?
+
From signing with Ming Hwee to your helper's first day: expect 3–4 weeks for transfer helpers already in Singapore, and 6–8 weeks for overseas helpers. The process includes EOP completion, candidate shortlisting, work permit application (1–3 weeks MOM processing), pre-arrival preparation, and post-arrival compliance (SIP attendance and medical exam within 7–14 days).

Legal Obligations

What are my key legal responsibilities as an employer?
+
You must provide suitable in-home accommodation with privacy and basic amenities, pay salary on time with clear records, provide at least one rest day per week, cover all medical expenses, arrange 6-monthly medical examinations, ensure your helper works only for your household at the registered address, and treat your helper respectfully and fairly.

What if my helper becomes pregnant?
+
Inform MOM immediately. Under current regulations, the helper must be repatriated. We guide you through termination procedures and MOM reporting requirements.

Apply to Ming Hwee β†’

We know what you're weighing. Leaving home to work overseas is one of the biggest decisions you'll ever make. You're doing it for your family β€” for your children's education, for your parents' wellbeing, for a future that's better than today. That takes real courage, and we respect it.

Our founder, Shirley, was an employer herself β€” a working mother who understood how much families depend on the person who cares for their home. That's why she built this agency to serve both sides: families who need someone they can trust, and helpers who deserve to be treated well.

What We Promise You

Screened Employers, Not Just Any Employer

We assess the families we work with. They must meet MOM housing standards, demonstrate a history of fair treatment, and commit to proper rest days and timely salary payment. Not every employer who contacts us is accepted.

Someone You Can Call After Placement

If something goes wrong β€” a dispute about rest days, concerns about living conditions, anything that makes you feel unsafe β€” our team is reachable. You are not alone once you start working.

Proper Documentation, No Shortcuts

Your contract, work permit, insurance, and medical clearance are handled correctly. We do not cut corners on paperwork that protects you.

How to Apply

1.

Fill out our application form (about 15 minutes β€” we ask detailed questions to match you properly).

2.

Our team contacts you for a phone or video interview.

3.

If you're a strong fit, we begin pre-departure preparation and start matching you with families.

Questions before applying? Reach our Philippines office or message us on WhatsApp/Viber. We speak Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia, Burmese, and English.

Build a Career With
Purpose and Accountability

Ming Hwee Employment Agency is hiring for its Singapore team. We are a 43-year-old, family-run domestic helper placement agency. Your work here has direct consequences β€” for families, for helpers' livelihoods, and for outcomes that matter. This is structured, responsible work that requires ownership, precision, and genuine care.

Who This Is For

You take ownership of outcomes. You're detail-oriented and respect compliance requirements. You communicate clearly. You're comfortable with structured SOPs. You value doing things properly over doing things fast. If you prefer loosely structured environments or purely transactional work, this isn't the right fit.
